Parkour Comes to Fishers!

Balance, Agility, Strength, and Endurance: these four words summarize the experience at B.A.S.E. Fitness Inc., Parkour. Popularized by American Ninja Warrior and popular action movies such as Casino Royale, The Bourne Legacy, and Brick Mansions, Parkour training is now available in Fishers!
Ayren Steuerwald combines his skills as a professional dancer, 4th degree black belt, and military veteran with a desire to push himself into realms of unknown physical boundaries. He became the first U.S. citizen living in the USA to become certified to instruct Parkour through the rigorous London-based A.D.A.P.T. program.
What is most impressive is that the facility is not the least bit intimidating. The age range of their clients is vast, as are their backgrounds and body types. “Anyone may participate in Parkour; on TV you see the extreme participants, not the average enthusiasts,” says instructor Michelle Hewitt.
All participants must pass safety tests as they advance through the levels. The foundation of Parkour is safety and progressions. “We build upon the basics, and through the method and strategic physical principles of Parkour, participants realize their depths of inner strength,” says Tammy Steuerwald, Ayren’s wife and co-owner.
The B.A.S.E. Parkour course is movable, with a miniature version of the equipment on the front table. The instructors create and re-design the layout, allowing for endless possibilities for the Parkour experience. Assistant coach Eve Eggleston adds, “Changing up the course expands and feeds the creative element for those who participate.”
“Movement is an amazing gift and should not be lost to laziness or boredom. We become strong so that we may be useful to others. Whatever we start together, we always finish together,” says coach Ayren.
Working alongside local police and firefighters for safety and emergency evacuation drills, B.A.S.E. Parkour is developing a Parkour-based program for individuals with impaired vision, as well as injuries requiring prosthetic aid.
Parkour is a great experience that allows you to dig deep within yourself and draw strength and support from fellow practitioners while under careful monitoring from the instructors. “The more you’re into it, the more avenues you find to challenge yourself in ways you hadn’t thought of before. We have clients who have lost a lot of weight through Parkour; we have kids who love the discipline and challenge, and entire families love doing this together. This is a sport that is open to all who wish to challenge themselves and still have fun,” says Tammy.
There are many levels of classes for Parkour, including a special curriculum designed for 5- to 8-year-olds. In addition to Parkour, B.A.S.E. also offers fundamental MMA classes (mixed martial arts), hip hop dance classes, birthday parties and Capoeira (Brazilian form of martial arts).
