Drumstick Dash: A Holiday Tradition You Can Really Sink Your Teeth Into

Over 18,000 runners and walkers are expected at this year’s annual Drumstick Dash which benefits the Wheeler Mission Ministries.

In our fast-paced world where nearly everything is obsolete the moment it comes out, there is something very reassuring and endearing about our holiday traditions. Traditions remind us that some things are truly meant to last. For some, the holiday means traveling to see loved ones, pumpkin pie, stuffing and turkey roasting in the oven, while for others it means lying around watching football games or planning for Black Friday sales. Why not try a new tradition that will truly make a difference? Consider participating in the 11th annual Wheeler Mission Drumstick Dash!

The 2013 Drumstick Dash will be held in Broad Ripple on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 28 at 9 am for the 4.6 mile competitive run/walk and the 2.5 mile fun run/walk. The Lil’ Gobbler’s Run is at 10:15 am. Wheeler Mission is expecting around 18,000 participants.

Brian Crispin, Director of Marketing for Wheeler Mission, says the race “was the first Thanksgiving Day event in the state and is now the third largest organized run in the state with participants from not just Central Indiana but also from 48 states.” The event is hosted by Blue Mile and will benefit homeless men, women and children in our community.

According to the Coalition for Homelessness and Prevention, an organization dedicated to tracking the number of homeless men, women and children, the number of homeless in Indianapolis will be around 1,600 in 2013.

Wheeler Mission is a non-government funded facility that runs their five facilities and programs with 80 percent of their operating budget from individuals. The race was created as a way to draw attention to this unfortunately growing population. This year’s race is presented by Huntington Bank and over 40 business and media partners, including Townepost, that will help to make this event possible.

Online registration and all event details can be found online at www.drumstickdash.org. If you are traveling out of town this year, consider the option to participate virtually. Check out details for the “Outta Town Dash Around” and participate anywhere you travel.

Thanksgiving is a time to get together and reflect on the blessings we have received. The best holiday traditions are those that will endure year after year, perhaps slow our pace down long enough to truly appreciate our blessings and make a difference in our community one meal at a time.
