Q & A with Avon Town Council Member Bev Austin

Where are you from?

I am from Belleville — I was born and raised in Hendricks County.

How long have you been on the Avon Town Council?

I took my seat in October of 2006.

What led you to run for this position?

I was working at the Chamber of Commerce and really wanted to get more involved in the community and saw this as an opportunity!

Tell me about your role in the American Cancer Society, how long you’ve been there?

I began as a volunteer in 2008 and started my career there in May 2011.

What does a typical day look like for you? (In both roles)

Haha! No such thing as typical! My council role varies greatly by the time of year and current projects. During budget season we have many more meetings to prepare for the approval — when projects are in front of us we will have additional meetings to prepare. As part of my council position I serve in a few liaison positions — each of these positions have the same kind of ebb and flow. I typically have 4 to 5 meetings per month for this position and the liaison positions. At the ACS, I spend about ¼ of my time focused internally helping our team to collaborate well with our customers and maximize our impact in the Indianapolis market. The rest of my time is spent with my accounts — larger employers and the sports team in Indy working on their employee engagement and involvement in our mission. I also have the responsibility of bringing new people to the organization by raising awareness of the good work we are doing.

Tell me about an accomplishment you are most proud of in your career.

Right now I am excited about the Real Men Wear Pink program I am working on with the American Cancer Society. It is an awareness/fundraising campaign and the individuals I am working with have displayed a great passion for fighting breast cancer. My favorite thing is to give a new volunteer information and then let them get creative and watch their success!

Have any advice for your younger self?

Speak up and act sooner when your gut is saying it isn’t right.

What is your main goal for the future?

To focus on enjoying the journey. I would like to inspire others to action.

Are you involved in any community organizations?

Through my council position I serve on the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management Board and I also serve on the Hendricks College Network board. I continue to be involved in our local Relay For Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events as a volunteer to honor my friend who lost her battle with cancer.

What do you like best about Avon?

I like that it feels like a young community and there is a great energy here!

Tell me about your family, ages, etc.

I have three children: Chelsea, Benjamin and Haley, and two grandchildren: Weston, 8 and Greyson, 2.

What do you do to relax?

I like to do crafts, spend time with my friends and read when I can.

What is you and your family’s favorite part of Avon?

We love the parks and honestly the variety of restaurant options is nice too!

What was your last vacation?

I went to Florida to visit my mom — I am planning to go back in December!

What was the last movie you saw?

“The Boss” with Melissa McCarthy was hilarious!
