Now that the flurry of the holidays has passed us, many of us just want to sit on the couch and break open the first disc of that DVD set we got for Christmas and hibernate for winter. And while our minds may be looking ahead to spring and warmer weather, one of the best ways to keep the winter blues away is to be with our friends and family!

Don’t let the bleak winter temperatures outside give you the blues! January is the perfect time to throw a party! Short  winter days mean long winter nights, and in January, football is in the air. Lift everyone’s spirits and help the cold days pass quickly by hosting a party or plan a gathering at a local team-friendly bar. Thankfully, it doesn’t take much planning and even if you’re not a huge football fan, the games are always lively and your friends will keep each other entertained.

While most of the bowl games are played on Jan. 1, be sure not to miss the party opportunity for the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship. This is the national championship game of the 2014 college football season, and takes place on Jan. 12. As the first-ever College Football Championship Game, (replacing the BCS National Championship Game), it will be the culmination of the 2014-15 bowl games. Whether you’re an Oregon Duck, an Ohio State Buckeye, a Florida State Seminole or an Alabama Crimson Tide, these national powerhouses are sure to set the stage for a winning party that’ll have you forgetting about the bleak outside temperatures!

Not a fan of college football? The NFL playoff games kick off with the wild card games, followed by the divisional round, then the conference championships. That’s three full weekends of football madness to keep our minds off our winter woes!

And if football just isn’t your thing, there’s always the party food! Start your party off right with festive dips, spreads, finger foods and appetizers. Beer Cheese Dip
1/4 to 1/2 can of beer
2 jars of Kraft Old English Spread
2 8oz. Pkgs. of Cream Cheese
Garlic Powder

Mix all together with a hand mixer. Add garlic to taste. Serve with fresh rye or white bread or any kind of cracker or breadstick. Or make a bread bowl by taking out the center and break it up into small pieces, then put the dip in the middle.

Winter celebrations will give everyone something to look forward to as we all cheer for the arrival of spring. There’s nothing like spending time with the people you love to keep your mind off the winter blues!
