The Greater Greenwood Chamber of Commerce’s Taste of the Southside continues to grow. Attendance was up 5% over last year, setting another new attendance record. More than 100 samples were available from 30 vendors at this year’s event. 2014 brought something new, a “Mixology Competition” sponsored by Republic National Distributing Company. Area bartenders each created a cocktail using 2 Gingers Whiskey, Sailor Jerry Rum or Stoli Vodka. The drinks were judged on the cocktail’s name, balance, simplicity, taste, originality and presentation. Andy Hurst from Texas Roadhouse was the winner and was also won the “People Choice Award.” His drink the Stoli Ole Oxen Free averaged 74.5 out of a possible 80 points.
Winners were also named in a several other categories. Those winners were:
- Best Dessert: Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice Cream
- Best Appetizer, Salad, Soup or Stew: Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria
- Best Beverage: Mexico City Grill
- Best Entrée: Holy Smoke Hog Roast Company
- Best Decorated Booth: Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice Cream and A Piece of Cake (tie)
The annual Chef Challenge, sponsored by WISH-TV and Indy Style, gave chefs 30 minutes to prepare three dishes. The winner was chosen based on plate presentation, flavor, portion size and how creatively the secret ingredients were incorporated. The Best of Show award went to Chef Richard Goss from Richard’s Kitchen and Market.
