Add ‘Second Tuesdays’ to Your Calendar for Free Fun Stuff in Fishers (Video)

Kids and adults won’t want to miss the chance to experience fine culture and quality music once a month. Free concerts are now happening on the Second Tuesday of each month at the Ji-Eun Lee Music Academy beginning at 7 p.m.

With performances from professional musicians, the free concerts feature selections intended to entertain and inspire audiences while broadening their musical tastes. These short informal events especially suit young audiences, lasting only 45 minutes and including engaging and dramatic works.

The audience was treated to eight lively works performed by the academy’s piano trio which features Ji-Eun Lee on piano, Mara Gunyon on violin and Kyungnam Oh on cello. At least a dozen children of different ages were in the audience, all of whom were captivated by the musicians’ expert performance, especially the final piece which was an emotional work by Mendelssohn.

By design, the comfortably brief concerts promote a family-friendly atmosphere. Ji-Eun Lee and her husband, Doug Whisman, who operate the academy, are dedicated to promoting the arts not only for children but also the community. They opened the academy in October 2005 with a vision of bringing cultural appreciation to the growing Fishers community and making it accessible to people who otherwise might be limited by family responsibilities in attending arts functions or studies. Ji-Eun notes that they have been working with several senior communities in making arrangements for some of Fishers’ older citizens to come and enjoy an evening of musical entertainment, as well.

The Second Tuesday programs will not be limited to classical works but will include an assortment of musical genres. According to Ji-Eun, “We will introduce each selection by explaining a little about the piece’s composer and its style. We want to educate the children and let them hear and learn about the many types of music, like jazz, pop and classical.”

For the present time, the Ji-Eun Lee Academy will host the Second Tuesdays concerts in the back hall of their studio. “But,” Doug explains, “we hope to expand the academy’s premises in the coming months so we can accommodate larger audiences.”

Eventually, they hope to attract a large enough audience to add additional monthly performance dates.

“We hope not only to further the arts within Fishers but also give something back to the community,” Doug said. “That’s why we’re presenting these concerts free of charge, like we do our May and November Formal Concerts.”

Ji-Eun adds: “Our focus, with the performances and showcases, is education. We want to provide an environment where all kids of all levels can learn to enjoy all types of music.”

The next Second Tuesday concert will be a guitar performance on April 10 at 7 p.m. at the Ji-Eun Lee Music Academy, located at 13017 Parkside Drive. Questions regarding Second Tuesdays or the Ji-Eun Lee Musical Academy can be directed to 579-5562.
