Fall Creek Student Designs Driver Helmet

Geoff Dodge Popular sprint car driver Geoff Dodge (left) presents a helmet to Molly Simmons (right), a fourth-grade student in Mrs. Lisa Hillenbrand’s class at Fall Creek Elementary School, 12131 Olio Rd., Fishers, Ind., recently. Dodge, a business student at IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis) who raced in selected events in the Firestone Indy Lights Series in 2006, chose Simmons’ design out of 161 entries in a helmet-coloring contest sponsored by Clarian Health’s ThinkFirst for Kids, a national injury-prevention program, and Inquisitive Kids, a magazine for elementary school students and their teachers.

Simmons also received a $50 savings bond for being the winner of the contest, which was designed to emphasize safety. The bicycle helmet, which features a brick border in honor of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, was painted by Michael Jones of Rockstar Paint, who donated his time and supplies to recreate Simmons’ drawing.
