While students started the school year August 10, two senior swimmers from Fishers High School and a teammate who graduated in May were at the Junior Nationals in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This wasn’t the first major swim meet of the summer; two FHS seniors started six weeks earlier with the Olympic Trials.

FHS seniors Lauryn Parrish and Lauren Edelman qualified to compete at the Olympic trials, held in Omaha, Nebraska. The excitement of participating in the Olympic Trials was beyond words for the girls. “We were on the same pool deck with Michael Phelps, Lilly King and Katie Ledecky!” says Parrish.

Parrish’s grandfather, who has attended a Super Bowl, the World Series and Final Four games, indicated the energy at Trials was unlike anything he had ever experienced.

“It’s hard to explain the excitement,” shares Parrish’s mom, Aimee. “It was so incredible. We couldn’t be more proud of Lauryn’s hard work. Eleven practices a week since the age of 11 definitely paid off when she got her Olympic trial cut!” Parrish has not yet committed to a school but has several offers.

It was the most incredible thing I’ve ever experienced,” says Parrish. “I learned so much, and it got me hungry to get back to training and see what I will be able to accomplish at the 2020 Trials.”

Six weeks later, FAST (Fishers Area Swimming Tigers) had three of their swimmers reach the Junior Nationals this year. Coinciding with the first week of school for the Hamilton Southeastern district, it was worth the trip for two seniors to miss the first few days of school as seniors at Fishers High School.

One swimmer, Maggie Jahns, a recent Fishers High School graduate, begins her collegiate swimming career with the University of Louisville. She is a 3-time Junior National qualifier and All-American in both 100m backstroke and 200 IM. She is also an All-American Academic for 2016. At Junior Nationals, she placed 8th overall in the 400 IM.

“Fishers High School and FAST have both pushed me to be my best, both in and out of the pool. I am so grateful for all that the sport of swimming has given me,” says Jahns. “Competing at a national level is an incredible experience. Having the honor to compete against the best swimmers in the nation on such a large stage helps prepare you for collegiate competition and makes the pressure of high school swimming that much easier.”

“I have always loved the water,” says Edelman, who is committed to the University of Kentucky. “I love the feel of the water and love to compete. Being on the block and the atmosphere is unbelievable.”

At the Olympic Trials, Edelman swam the 200 IM. She was ranked 92nd going in and finished 27th overall and third for ‘18 and under’ in Omaha. At Junior Nationals, she finished in the top 16 nationally for all four of her events: 200 fly – 14th, 200 breast – 14th, 200 IM – 14th and 400 IM – 1st.

At the Olympic Trials and at Junior Nationals, there were many familiar faces. “There is so much incredible swimming talent in Indiana,” says Edelman’s mom, Sonya.

Training for this year’s high school and collegiate swim seasons begins in September.
