FHS Spell Bowl team wins regional meet, qualifies for state contest

Fishers spelling bowlFishers High School’s Academic Ambush team captured the regional Spell Bowl competition for the second year in a row scoring a school record 68 points. According to Coach John Drozd, earning top honors in defending the title were perfect speller Alex Smith and near-perfect spellers Yaniv Schmukler and James McKnight. He said kudos also go to seniors Alex Smith, Yuji Xie and Chris Womble as their teams have earned conference and regional championships for four straight years. With a score of 68, the team qualified for the state finals at Purdue University on November 10. Among the 70 schools competing in the Class 1 category across the state, the Fishers squad placed ninth. The top 11 schools qualify for the state finals. Deborah Hejl is the other coach.
