Inaugural Event Coming Up May 2 at HSE High School

There’s a new method of learning sweeping education these days, and Hamilton Southeastern Schools can’t wait to show it off. Hamilton Southeastern Schools is holding its first annual HSEvening of Innovation, Wednesday, May 2 at the HSE High School College and Career Academy.
The event kicks off at 6 p.m. and features an array of classroom projects on display to demonstrate how Hamilton Southeastern Schools has become part of the future of learning.
“So much of classroom education has been focused on knowledge-based learning,” says Susan Drumm, Instructional Technology Coach for HSE Schools. “The future in learning is now in hands-on project-based learning.”
While teachers have no plans to discontinue knowledge-based and textbook or workbook learning, they have shifted towards implementing more hands-on project-based learning in recent years.
“Technology has allowed us to explore the benefits of teaching across multiple modalities,” Drumm says. “It’s important to use cross disciplines in learning. Now, we can teach them with textbooks, videos and hands-on applications.”
With 21 buildings in the school district, teachers haven’t had an opportunity to show parents the latest innovative practices. This special event brings all buildings together under one roof, so parents can see what’s been going on in the classrooms.
But don’t expect the Evening of Innovation to focus only on technology. Seventy handmade projects will be featured, including a chair made with a cardboard box. Parents will have the chance to see two types of interactive displays. Innovation Booths will be set up for guests to explore various projects that the students have accomplished. An Innovation Playground area where you can see things like a petting zoo and through a program that partnered the students with the zoo, the kids designed a toy for animals which will be on display. The miniature pc, Raspberry Pi, will be featured, no doubt showing off a whole host of things the kids have created, along with a breakout box (problem solver), a maker space where guests can experiment with Spheros, small programmable robotic balls.
The five-person team (Susan Drumm, John Hochstetler, Leslie Hopper, Shawn Humphrey and Kelly Moore) has been meeting since the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year to plan this exciting event. Teachers from each of the 21 school buildings will be represented along with students, which they’ve hand-picked to help show off their innovative projects. The team has been hard at work, meeting once or twice a month, to ensure the event is the best it can be, right down to every small detail, and they’re still working on finalizing the finishing touches.
Don’t miss out on this celebration of innovation and innovative practice. The two-hour event is open-house style, so, you can arrive and leave at your own pace but give yourself plenty of time to explore. More details will be announced on the HSE website, hse.k12.in.us.
