HSEHS choirs win first places at Smoky Mountain Music Festival

Hamilton Southeastern High School’s advanced choral ensembles of Royal Edition and Royal Sensation competed and earned first places in the Smoky Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg, TN, April 20.

Choirs from Alabama, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky and North Carolina participated in the competition. Royal Edition won in the Class 4A Concert Choir Division and Royal Sensation won in the Women’s Concert Choir Division. Judges were Craig Jessop (Director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir), Dr. Charles Ball (University of Tennessee) and George Bitzas (University of Tennessee).

“The students received exemplary comments on their performance and professionalism,” said director Danielle Mullen. Dr. Kirby Shaw (Southern Oregon University) internationally known choral conductor, composer and educator made the remark regarding Royal Edition: “Arguably, I think that ensemble is one of the finest choirs I’ve heard in the nation.”

Both groups received the top two scores of the competition. The groups are under the direction of Mullen and Shawn Porter.
