YMI: Benefiting Our Kids and Community

The school year has come to an end, and visions of floaties and lemonade are fresh on our minds. While most people are gearing up for some fun and relaxation, Darren Heil and his team at Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI) are buckling down to meet their 2020 Initiative goals.

YMI provides mentoring for students by building relationships based on encouragement and empathy. The 2020 Initiative is to provide one-on-one support to 600 students by mentoring in grades 5-12 in the HSE schools.

“It is important to get in as young an age as possible to build the long-lasting relationships and the opportunities these relationships will produce for the mentors and the mentees in our community,” replied Todd Zimmerman, Fishers City Councilor At-Large.

The two newest additions to include YMI in their schools are Riverside Intermediate and Sand Creek Intermediate. The principals at these schools are beyond excited to begin this journey with YMI.

The principal at Riverside Intermediate stated, “Building relationships is our top priority. This is the foundation for RSI in creating a safe, comfortable educational environment where all children thrive. YMI will give us the opportunity to naturally enrich this foundation even more.”

Right now as school is winding down, YMI is gearing up for the mentor training taking place this August. There is still time for you be a part of this life-changing organization! There is a misconception that mentoring is only for troubled students, but it is for anyone who wishes for more support!

“YMI is filling a unique role in students’ lives in our community. This is especially helpful to those students who may be dealing with extra circumstances in their lives, including some mental health issues that we have become increasingly more and more aware of recently. Having the support of a mentor is one of the key pieces, and YMI is uniquely positioned to fill this role,” voiced Curt Walters, lead pastor for Crosspoint Church and member of the Mental Health Task Force in Fishers.
