On Feb. 17 the Indianapolis Department of Public Works hosted a community meeting about the 82nd Street widening project.

According to the DPW, the road is operating at an unsafe level of service during peak hours of traffic. Many residents of the area have suggested changing the signal timing, but the city said that would only give a short-term solution and that widening 82nd Street from Hague Road to Fall Creek Road is the only long-term solution to the traffic congestion.

The estimated $14.5 million project will include widening the street to two lanes each direction, taking some of the grade out of the road, adding safety measures – like a shoulder on certain parts of the road – and adding a sidewalk. There will be traffic signals added at Castle Lake Road and Castleton Boulevard. The bridge at Fall Creek near Sargent Road will also be made wider and get a new deck as part of the project.

Phase one of the project will cover from Hague Road to Lantern Road (just east of the Fall Creek bridge) and take place spring 2015 to fall of 2016. While phase two will take place in the spring of 2018 to the fall of 2019 and cover Lantern Road to Fall Creek Road.

The design and land acquisition of phase one is completed and the utility relocation is underway. There will be no travel restrictions over winter, which will have work being done from Hague to Raven Rock Road. To widen the north side of the street, the eastbound and center lanes will be used for traffic. The same will be done with the westbound lanes when widening the south side of the street.

This “open house” portion of the meeting came after a presentation was given to explain the project. Many people filled out comment and question cards for the DPW which will addressed in a subsequent meeting.
