Republican Party leader and Fishers Deputy Mayor Leah McGrath recently launched her campaign for the Indiana House of Representatives in District 88, the seat being vacated by Speaker of the Indiana House Brian Bosma.
McGrath, who has been serving as the deputy mayor of the City of Fishers, had previously announced that she will be leaving that post to join Indianapolis-based Knowledge Services as a Vice President in January.
As Fishers first deputy mayor, McGrath helped to lead the community’s transition from a town to a city, including efforts to modernize the city’s internal operations, eliminating antiquated ordinances and updating local codes. She also spearheaded a city-wide effort to develop its first long-range comprehensive plan.
It is a role that she looks back on fondly.
“The majority of the things I have worked on here in Fishers over the years have really been focused on community involvement and community engagement,” McGrath says. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with people in all walks of life and figure out ways to better serve our community. My experience I have had here in the city has prepared me well to be effective.”
Today, McGrath is excited to move forward with her campaign for District 88.
“Under Republican leadership, Indiana has steadily moved in the right direction for nearly two decades,” McGrath says. “Gov. Holcomb and Speaker Bosma deserve much credit for where we have come as a state, but there is still much work to be done. As our community’s representative in the General Assembly, I will bring a commitment to look at old problems in new ways, to always protect taxpayers, to challenge the status quo when necessary and bring people together to address the challenges our children and grandchildren will face. I believe we have a responsibility to protect the freedoms of, and ensure opportunities for, all Hoosiers, but especially our children and those most vulnerable who have yet to reach their potential.”
McGrath has been active in more than two dozen state and local organizations and currently serves on the boards of Conner Prairie, the Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability, and the Fishers Youth Assistance Program. Her past leadership includes service on then-Lt. Governor Ellsperman’s Committee on Broadband Policy, the Hamilton County Transit Authority, and Vice Chair of the Indiana Republican Party.
McGrath also volunteers for several of her son’s school and athletic programs.
“Timing is everything,” McGrath says. “I’ve got three, awesome kids. This was a decision my husband and I talked with them about and they were excited about it. I’ve got a real passion for public policy. I want to take that innovation and entrepreneurial attitude to the state house. I’m just going to take it one day and one week at a time.”
