Girls About Town: Fun Without the Sun

Writers  /  Chalene Braun & Rachel Quade

Okay, it’s April in Indiana, and if you’re anything like us, you’re sick of the cold weather and want to get out and have some fun! Okay, we always have fun, but football season is long gone, March Madness is over and summer seems forever away! Everyone seems to be hibernating. Heck, the only time you’ve probably seen your neighbor is a quick wave hello over the piles of snow! Believe it or not, there are some great local places to get out and meet up with friends, and you don’t have to wait until after hump day!

Your Girls About Town bundled up and decided to weather the weather and see what trouble we could find beyond the seemingly mountains of snow at the ends of our driveways! Always ready to explore around the town, we ventured out.

First stop, Tuesday night. If you like music, games, and drinking, boy, do we have the place for you! “Beat It” on over to Claude and Annie’s for D.J. Bingo! Located in Fishers off 37 and 141st Street, arrive early folks. This place is rocking the casbah!

Starting at 7 p.m. sharp, you’ll play four rounds of music-themed bingo. From ‘80s hair bands, country and rock, short snippets of songs are played, and like regular bingo, you check to see if the song title is on your card, but don’t take long because this game moves quickly! Beginners tip: Normally cheating is “Bad to the Bone,” but they allow it here. Feel free to download an app like Shazam to help you identify the tune! The winners of each round are awarded a bottle of liquor, like “Money for Nothing!” Wahoooo! That’ll fix your “Achy Breaky Heart” and give you reason to “Celebrate Good Times…Come on!”

Next stop, Wednesday night. Charlottesville had Dave Matthews. Seattle had Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Could Indy have the next big thing in music? If you want to know, check out the Original Music Series at the new Scarlet Whiskey and Wine Bar! Southern charm reigns here! You’ll love the relaxed VIP lounge feel – complete with wow crystal light fixtures, silky chairs that beckon you to sit back, lounge, and enjoy an intimate evening of music. All this under the watchful eye of “Scarlet,” the seductive lady in red whose portrait hangs in the background.

Starting at 7 p.m., prepare to be entertained by three local songwriters who perform their original music. We got to see our local favorite country singer, Corey Cox, as he played alongside two other local artists. Also, whiskey and wine aren’t the only specialties here. You’ll want to try a few of their signature cocktails like we did. We absolutely love love loved She Smiles. A delightful blend of orange-infused vodka, St. Germain and Approl, this cocktail is sure to make you smile!

Maybe trivia is your thing! Where can you match wits and have a great time every Wednesday night from 7-9 p.m.? If you bet five points and guessed The Gathering Bistro & Pub in Geist… ding, ding, ding…give yourself five points! You can play on a team or by yourself in this fast paced, live hosted game. Topics range from history to sports to entertainment. Each round you bet your points on how well you think you know your trivia. Think you know which two teams got their fifth Super Bowl rings in the ‘90s? If you guessed the Pittsburg Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys, you are WRONG! As we found out!! The correct answer is the 49’ers and the Cowboys…or so our host, Kash, claimed! Yes, we lost FIVE points on that one, but we’re not bitter…OK maybe just a little. Have no fear, these girls rallied! We came back because we know our Brady Bunch and state capital trivia!

We finished up and tied for first, then came the tie-breaker. What year did construction start on the Roman Coliseum? Our rivals answered 70 A.D. The answer? 60 A.D.! Who knows that? Clearly, these people spend too much time watching The History Channel!!!

If you finish in the top three for trivia, you win a Gathering gift certificate. Trust us – you’ll love their food and drinks! Managed and owned by Purdue Hospitality and Management alums and their gracious dad, the McGlinchey family knows how to run a restaurant and bar!

We especially loved their Top-Of-The-Mark pizza with marinara and BBQ sauce topped with bacon, chicken, mushrooms, green peppers, fresh sliced, tomatoes, and double cheese. It is CRAZY good! The ahi tuna app was awesome! We completed our night with chocolate mousse. By the way, does anyone have some suggestions on where we can find some swimsuit coverups for spring break? One more thing to check out, their tea lovers cocktails. They carry TATRATEA liqueurs and they are tea-riffic! We hear this is the only place in town to find these delicious concoctions, and with live music every weekend this is a sure win for a terrific time!

You don’t have to wait for the weekend or summer to have a good time. Bundle up and get out with your friends and neighbors for some mid-week adventure! As always, CHEERS!
