A new MMA Fit Club just recently opened in McCordsville. MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts, a blending of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (pronounced Jew-Jitsue) and Muay Thai (Moy Tie.) One might make a snap judgment by thinking this extreme club is mostly for men. But actually, there are many types of classes offered for women and children, such as, Yoga, Self-Defense, Fit Momma, Women’s Only Muay Thai, and Fit Play designed for building self-esteem in kids. After hours, there are even “open gym” slots available for the serious professional fighters several nights a week.

“MMA is getting very popular, though there aren’t many classes around here,” says Tammy Lynch-Bobbitt, owner of MMA Fit Club, who stands just five feet tall, weighing in at only 100 lbs. “This sport is huge on the west and east coast and in Florida. It’s very addicting. You either love it or hate it.”

Tammy was inspired to open MMA because of her twelve year old son, Brayton Lynch. Together, they began taking lessons for a few years and have grown to appreciate it so much. Tammy says, “My true happiness is not only supporting him (Brayton) in something that makes him happy and healthy, but also enjoying it with him.” Tammy is offering, “First Class Free” to the public so that you can come out and try any class to see how you feel about it before committing.

Feisty Female Fighter Teaching Women’s Only Muay Thai

April Brake Training in Vegas The “Women’s Only Integrated Muay Thai” class is not taught by any ordinary instructor, but one with extra spunk. Her name is April Brake, and she is in the process of auditioning for a T.V. reality show about female Mauy Thai fighters.

“I have just returned from an audition held in Vegas for a reality show that aired on OH Oxygen Channel,” says Brake. “I have been training in the art of Muay Thai for several years and I feel like I know that Technique well enough to audition for the show. I am confident that I am very capable of fighting Muay Thai and would love the opportunity to put what I have learned over the years to the test.” Brake trained at Mater Toddy’s Muay Thai Gym in Vegas. Obviously, her training went really well, as she was told that she has “great technique.”

Brake’s new “Women’s Only Muay Thai” class at the new facility in McCordsville is integrated with some general MMA training. The focus is on technique and conditioning and gets you in shape fast! Classes are beginner friendly. Brake comments, “It’s almost unheard of to receive this kind of training from a woman, and just for women.”

Yoga

For those of you who prefer “Yoga,” this class is taught by a certified yoga instructor named Kelly Gilliate. Fit Momma

For all new moms with infants and toddlers, you may wish to scope out this exciting class titled, “Fit Momma” which appears to be a win-win situation for both mom and baby.

“This class is a great concept. You don’t have to worry about getting a baby sitter,” says Cassey Pontious, a certified athletic and personal trainer who teaches this new class.

In “Fit Momma,” moms incorporate their babies into their exercise routine. For example, they do lunges, squats, and leg pushes with their babies. These movements can have a tranquil effect on a cranky baby. In fact, Cassey came up with the idea of teaching this class from her own experience of having a colicky son. Her background of “fitness movements” enabled her to naturally calm her baby. She thought to herself, “Why don’t I just teach a class to help other moms who wish to be a mom and yet work out at the same time?”

Fit Play

This class, also taught by Cassey Pontious, encourages fitness while playing and building self esteem in kids’ ages 6-11 years of age. The focus is on having fun, being fit, and feeling fabulous.

On Saturday, December 19th, Cassey is having her Fit Play registration for kids. She will have the Clarian FANN van and tons of giveaways at this event.

Muay Thai

This class is primarily a Muay Thai Kickboxing class, but is integrated with MMA training. The focus is on technique and conditioning that gets you fit fast. This class is taught by Josh Brake, whom has been training in Muay Thai for more than ten years; originally under Saka Sem (The Punisher) Kathawong.

Jiu-Jitsu

This class focuses on grappling (ground fighting.) This is a hands-on experience learning submissions, take downs, and much more. You will learn to defeat opponents without having to hit them. The main instructor for this class is Todd Kiser, who has trained for nine years and has also competed in more than twenty professional MMA fights.

Upcoming Saturday Seminars

Occasionally, seminars will be available to everyone on certain Saturdays beginning sometime in January. The dates have not yet been established. Some seminars coming up are Victim Prevention and MMA Fighting, taught by professional fighters.

This Self-Defense class will premier occasionally and be taught by Trent Virt, who has been a Law Enforcement professional for sixteen years. Virt has worked for a security consulting firm for the past eight years, providing executive protection to current and former NBA players and corporate executives. He has even traveled to Thailand to stay sharp on his skills. This extraordinary seminar goes beyond the average self-defense tutorial. You will receive answers to important questions concerning police response time to assault emergencies. You will learn what to do in a dangerous situation and more importantly, how to avoid becoming a target/victim.

“Victim Prevention is like insurance,” says Tammy, owner of MMA. “You never know when you might need it and when you do need it, you’re glad you have the knowledge.”

Professional Fighters

Two reputable fighters, who will lead their own seminar on professional fighting, are Shamar “Coldblooded” Bailey and Chris “Lightsout” Lytle. These two men fight fires here in Indianapolis as part of their daytime jobs but they also fight professionally as their sport, traveling all around the world to compete.
