Recently I read an article written about corporate wellness programs and why every company should have one.
Zoe Finch Totten is being referred to as the Cookie Monster of corporate wellness programs. Her
program, The Full Yield is aimed at cutting companies health-care costs through
their employee’s stomachs. Her aim is
to educate people on the power that food has to improve our health and lower
our expensive health care bills. The
healthier you eat, the healthier you are, the less your chances of getting a
disease is, the lower your health-care costs. It’s that simple! What a chain
reaction the food choices we make every day has on our lives!
Its interesting to know that an employee with a BMI (body mass index) over 30 will on average cost $2,500 annually to a company’s health
care bill. Numbers talk and neither of these numbers look good to the employer
or the employee. No person would choose to have a BMI of 30 and no company
would appreciate spending an extra $2,500.
I’m a huge proponent for Corporate Wellness and feel that every company,
no matter how large of small, should be concerned for their employee’s health,
not just their health insurance. The
National Business Group on Health predicts that all large companies will
incorporate a Corporate Wellness program into their company by 2012.
Totten’s company, The Full Yield, is unique because hers is the first wellness program to encourage employees to eat only whole,
unprocessed food. The majority of
wellness programs out there today mainly focus on helping employees stop
smoking, reduce stress and to see the benefits of exercise. Through this new way of improving corporate
wellness, Totten may have a better effect on making health care more affordable
than the new health-care bill.
Just a little food for thought.
