Summer Nights are Made for Fun

Writer and Photographer / Julie Yates

As the lazy days of summer lengthen into extended daylight hours, warm nights make it possible for individuals, couples and families to relish all the season has to offer. Community residents are fortunate to live in a community that has varied options to choose from during this time of the year. The suggestions below are just a few of the local activities available, but whatever is chosen is bound to be wonderful if experienced on a sultry summer evening.

ENJOY ICE CREAM AT AN ICONIC LOCATIONice cream

There are several places in Greenwood where people can satisfy their sweet tooth, but two in particular are well-known area landmarks. The Suds and Mrs. Curl are destinations where the surrounding atmosphere is as big of a draw as the chance to sample their treats. Long known as a great place to enjoy a frosty root beer float or cruise by in a classic car, The Suds is currently celebrating its 60th year. Mrs. Curl has been serving up soft serve ice cream since 1962, and its garden-like outdoor seating area is bordered by a small waterway where patrons can feed the lucky fish that gather there.

APPRECIATE THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Greenwood is lucky to have a large number of public parks that are the perfect place to visit at the end of a summer’s day. Besides basic playground equipment, they offer so much more. The list of amenities includes hiking trails, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, volleyball courts, swimming pools and picnic shelters. To find a park close to home, visit the Parks and Recreation section on the Journey Johnson County website, JourneyJohnsonCounty.org.

Patrons can pick from a cluster of restaurants that offer outside seating. Revery is located on West Main Street while La Trattoria and Vino Villa are right across the street from each other on nearby Madison Avenue. As the day’s sunshine recedes, the glow from strings of lights hung overhead transform each establishment’s outdoor space into a magical place.

LISTEN TO TOE-TAPPING HARMONIES AT AN OUTDOOR VENUE

Every Saturday through September 10, the city of Greenwood hosts a summer concert at the beautifully landscaped Greenwood Amphitheater. Sponsored by Mallow Run Winery and Oaken Barrel Brewing Company, the performance lineup includes local bands that are sure to get everyone from toddlers to grandparents up and moving.

Flexible summer schedules are just right to sandwich in more seasonable fun. It is the perfect time to try out these activities made for warm nights. However, the biggest bonus is the memories that can be appreciated long after the season fades.
