Butler University: Under Construction
Butler University is beginning construction on a 1,038-space parking garage on campus that will open in August 2015.
“This multi-purpose parking facility has been in the planning stages for years,” Butler president James Danko said. “Through meaningful dialogue, neighborhood input, and a close relationship with the city of Indianapolis, Butler is now starting a project that represents a transformation of this area of midtown Indy.”
The plan was approved by the Board of Trustees in July, and the groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday, Sept. 18.
The garage will be located behind Clowes Memorial Hall on Sunset Avenue. Rich Michal, Butler executive director of facilities, said that there is adequate parking during the week. However, it is high-volume events on the weekend that cause problems.
“During the regular academic day, it will be faculty and staff and visitors in the parking garage, so that on evenings and weekends, those spaces will be available for events,” he said. “During the academic day, there is sufficient parking on campus. The constrain is during basketball games or large events, and that is what this garage will help address.”
“This new structure will not only accommodate parking,” Danko said. “Its dining and retail components will create new economic growth opportunities for one of the best neighborhoods in Indianapolis. It will serve as a welcome amenity for students, neighbors and visitors alike.”
The structure will include 15,000 square feet of retail space.
The parking garage is not the only project the university is currently working on. The university announced plans for a new residence hall this summer to be completed by Fall 2016. Butler is also hoping to complete its Streetscape project by June 2015, which aims to enhance entrances to the campus.
