Township & School Lease Runs up Legal Bills

White River Township Trustee OfficeSoon after White River Trustee Mark Messick assumed office in 2011 he found a problem with the lease between the township and the school system. The previous Trustee failed to get the board to approve the lease as required by state law. That meant the school and township did not have a legal agreement. For several years the Center Grove School system has been using a portion of the White River Township Trustee building as the location for the Center Grove Academy. The lack of a valid lease left the township in a weak position when the school decided to move the academy into the old Maple Grove Elementary School.

Both the township and the school system lawyers agreed that the lease needed to be valid and made retroactive to December 2008. What the township and school didn’t expect was the huge legal bills that would come with negotiating the lease.
