When you call 2Marines Lawn and Landscape, you’re greeted like a longtime friend. Owner Julian Hodges, SGT. USMC (Ret.), has all of his clients saved in his phone just as his inner circle of friends would be, and you’re treated as such from the moment you become a valued client. “I’m a stickler for quality control; the work has to be meticulous,” he said of his Angie’s List Super Service Award–winning company. Fewer than 5 percent of all companies meet the strict eligibility requirements to be considered for the prestigious award, which has been presented to the local business for five years in a row.

2Marines, an American owned and operated company based in Fishers, Indiana and in business since 2009, prides itself on being an “all-American company” employing veterans of the armed forces and hard working citizens to install breathtaking landscapes and deliver top-notch commercial and residential property management. From lawn mowing and fertilization, to the most intricate of landscapes, 2Marines has you covered! Julian continues his endless pursuit of greater expertise through Purdue University, which helps keep him fluent in all things related to his profession. With nearly two decades of experience in landscape and property management, his broad knowledge rivals that of his passion for the community and unwavering dedication to his country.

Julian proudly served nearly seven years in the United States Marine Corps as a machine gunner, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. He is honored and humbled to have taken part in America’s Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). In 2006 his unit received orders to deploy to Iraq, where they fought daily for seven and a half months, consequently taking heavy casualties while reclaiming the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, Iraq. In 2010 he was medically retired. “I am proud and blessed to have served with some of the most heroic, brave and patriotic men America has to offer—truly our nation’s finest,” said Hodges. The hardworking veteran comes from a long line of military servicemen including his grandfather, father and brother, Christopher Hodges, who is also a decorated United States Marine combat infantryman. Julian truly recognizes the many sacrifices our military, police, firefighters and their families make daily to keep us safe. 2Marines doesn’t just say they are grateful, they continue to show their gratitude by offering a 10% discount on all services to active military personnel, veterans and first responders. They also offer a 5% senior citizen discount.

When pressed on what he loves most about what he does and the business he has so faithfully built, Julian says he’s passionate about customer service, taking care of people, doing what’s right and always making sure his clients don’t feel like just a number. The core values he learned as a Marine coupled with his strong Christian faith are what continue to guide his business.

Indianapolis resident Jeff Hallal couldn’t agree more. Hallal insists finding 2Marines in 2011 was serendipitous when he was looking for a landscaper to help beautify the memorial garden in his back yard. Hallal’s son, Marine Private First Class Deryk Hallal, was killed in 2004 while serving in Ramadi, Iraq. Pfc. Hallal was posthumously awarded The Bronze Star with “V” for Valor, as well as the Purple Heart and Combat Action Ribbon for his incredible act of bravery, heroism and complete disregard for his own personal safety while under intense heavy enemy gunfire. His father, Jeff, thought that the connection of his son’s military service with having a fellow Marine work to revamp his memorial seemed fitting. Hallal would soon be hosting a traveling group of 40 Marines from his fallen son’s unit that upcoming Memorial Day weekend and hoped to have his landscape and son’s memorial garden in top shape, prior to their arrival. After hearing Deryk’s story, Julian felt that more needed to be done for the special occasion as well as what it meant to memorialize and pay respect to his fallen Marine brother in arms.

2Marines immediately sprang into action, calling upon local VFWs and The American Legion for donations to properly pay tribute to the decorated American hero. Many uniformed active duty Marines from the Indianapolis area also pitched in to help revamp the garden in Hallal’s back yard, adding trees and lighting, refurbishing the cross honoring Deryk, and making the yard “look like a golf course.” Hallal says, “It’s not just a job for Julian. He takes his work personally and really takes pride in what he does for the community.” The men have remained close friends since the memorial makeover and Hallal knows meeting Julian is nothing short of divine intervention.

Their unique personal touch and attention aren’t just reserved for military families. The veteran says staying heavily involved in day-to-day operations helps keep his small business at a level of service above and beyond a large corporation. “Being so involved keeps me accountable to my customers.” Knowing the clients well, having pride in a job well done and a desire to retain clients year after year makes 2Marines a business that stays competitive against larger landscaping corporations that may not have the ability to maintain such a high “inspection-ready” type of quality control.

Fishers residents have many landscaping businesses to choose from but Julian is confident that people are willing to pay for a high level of integrity and service. “We bring so much more than just landscaping to the table. Our traditional, all-American values are what really set us apart from the competition.” Whether it’s a large landscape project to help beautify an otherwise drab yard, weekly lawn maintenance or managing a sprawling commercial property, 2Marines Lawn & Landscape, LLC is a local business that will work hard to make you proud.
