These are exciting times at Hamilton Southeastern Schools. The HSE21 initiative that has been in development since 2011 has finally reached its implementation phase. In the fall, 5th and 6th grade students (intermediate) will each have an iPad as an instructional tool to support their learning in preparation for the skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century global economy. The planning process has included students, parents, teachers and community partners. Here is a summary of how we are laying the groundwork:

Students
First 20 days of school videos
Our intermediate students will watch and discuss staff-created video clips that define student expectations, discuss rules regarding appropriate usage and teach Internet safety.

Teachers
In the summer months, teachers will enhance their curricula by developing units and adding digital resources that integrate 21st century concepts and skills. Teacher training will emphasize a blended instructional approach that combines both digital and printed resources with best instructional practices. Teachers also will have opportunities to grow professionally and expand their expertise through free in-house and statewide conferences that address digital literacy, student engagement and classroom management with electronic tools. Plus, teachers and students will benefit from community partnerships with the Hamilton East Public Library and Launch Fishers for resource sharing and career exploration.

Parents
HSE staff has held three initial parent meetings to offer an overview of the implementation plan and to answer questions. The screencast of these meetings along with a list of Q and A’s are posted on the HSE website to support parents. Future sessions will include Internet safety and awareness classes (in collaboration with the Fishers Police Department) and tips on monitoring their child’s accounts and activities.

Distribution dates for parents opting to rent an iPad for their child are August 5, 6, 7. More information will be sent out in the summer for those families.

While we have tried to gather input and anticipate all possible concerns and challenges implementation might bring, we know issues will arise that may require us to make adjustments. Through this process, we will continue to provide information and updates as needed.
