For our second show, Mike Clayton joined us to talk about bourbon and some of his favorites distilled in his hometown of Frankfort, Kentucky.

The second podcast in the series titled “Happy Hour with Ray and Adam Cox” broadcasted live on July 6 from Elite Beverages in Noblesville. This podcast featured father son duo Ray and Adam Cox and was hosted by Joni Michaels. Special guest Mike Clayton, nicknamed the “bourbon savant”, joined the show.

A bourbon aficionado, Mike shared his expertise by telling the viewing audience the requirements for a bourbon to be a bourbon: limestone water, new fire charred oak barrels and 51% of the mix must be corn. To go along with this winning recipe, Mike shared that 96% of the world’s bourbon is made in his home state of Kentucky. Throughout the episode, Ray and Adam poured Mike’s favorite bourbons: Buffalo Trace, Blanton’s and 1792.

While sampling, Mike taught the others the proper way to “sniff and spin” bourbon much like a wine. After sampling 1792, Mike told them to always remember: “Bourbon is all about taste. What tastes good to me, Adam (Cox) might not like. But bourbon is all about taste”.

An audience member offered up the question on the difference between Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam, and Mike and Ray debated on whether Jack Daniel’s could be considered a bourbon rather than a whiskey. While Mike said it could be a bourbon because they used new fire charred oak barrels, Ray disagreed based on the fact that Jack Daniel’s charcoal filters their drinks.
