For the last 15 years, Lawrence Baking Company, 8143 Pendleton Pike, Indianapolis, has been making a wide range of outstanding treats for its loyal and hungry customers.
Co-Owner Chris Smith loves baking and serving her delicious donuts, pastries, pies and cookies to long-time guests who have become good friends.
“Lawrence has a community feel to it,” Smith says. “It’s much like home to me. I come from Smith Valley in Greenwood. We get a lot of customers from both Geist and Fishers, because I see more traffic on Carroll Road and Olio Road coming down the Pike to get on I-465 (to come see us).”
Smith and her son, Jason East, opened Lawrence Baking Company in November of 2003.
“We started as a wholesaler with delivery service,” Smith says. “We then opened the retail shop on Pendleton Pike with coffee.”
Smith has previous baking experience. She worked at Klosterman’s Bakery on Guion Road. Jason worked at Firestone in Noblesville.
“The first nine years of being open, we were located closer to the street (Pendleton Pike), and we did very well with the retail business,” Smith says. “For the last six years, we have been in a larger unit, but out of sight from the street, so we haven’t been doing as well with that. Our wholesale business is still good.”
Smith noted that Lawrence Baking Company’s wholesale profits are about 95 percent of their business now.
“People thought we went out of business when we moved across the parking lot,” Smith says. “We are now in the shopping strip, maybe 500 feet from our old location, in the Old China Buffet unit, in Esquire Shopping Plaza.”
Lawrence Baking Company features a diverse selection of donuts, including cake, yeast, filled, frosted, iced and glazed. Many businesses, churches and schools order donuts to be delivered. The delivery service is $3.
“We also have a lot of Danish pastries, including turnovers, snails, bear claws, alligators, cream cheese rolls, orange rolls, croissants, Napoleons and cream puffs,” Smith adds.
Cookie fans can indulge with Lawrence Baking Company’s tasty cookies, including roll outs, cut outs, drip, iced and tea cookies.
“We like to tell people that they can start their parties or gatherings on a sweet note by serving guests with tasty treats,” Smith says.
Other delicious items include muffins, such as banana nut, blueberry, cranberry orange, white chocolate chip raspberry, upside down pumpkin pie, bran, chocolate cream cheese, lemon blueberry, corn muffins, Jalapeño corn (on request) and different fruit breads.
Pies include pumpkin, pecan, peach, apple, cherry, lemon-lime, key lime, coconut cream, sugar cream, banana cream and blueberry.
“We also have five kinds of bagels to choose from including plain, whole wheat, cinnamon raisin, blueberry and cream cheese, with butter as toppings,” Smith says.
The best selling items at Lawrence Baking Company are the apple fritters.
“I think men are more drawn to them,” Smith says. “Sugar cream pies are also a favorite.”
Smith’s own personal favorite treat is the cinnamon cake donut.
Smith noted that her loyal customers have kept Lawrence Baking Company in business for the last 15 years.
“Our Geist, Lawrence and Indianapolis customers have been good to us over the years, with both wholesale and retail,” Smith says. “We’ve made good friends along the way.”
