Winners Announced for ‘Independence’ Photo Contest

At The Guard PostThe results are in for our Independence Photo Contest, and the winner is Matthew Vargo’s “At the Guard Post.”

We enjoyed seeing the many forms of “independence” taking place around Geist, from a first set of wheels to Fourth of July fireworks. (And we can’t wait to hear all about your summer vacations for our next contest).

As our winner, Vargo will receive a free Discovery Flight from Indy Aero at Mt Comfort Airport. His winning photograph features soldiers at Mt. Comfort Airport. Here’s what the judges had to say:

  • This photo made me feel proud and sad. I liked it before factoring in any official criteria. Although it was taken just a few miles down the road, it reminded me of the independence we all are lucky to have. This is what a good photograph can do! — Brenda Staples
  • What a beautiful portrait of those who risk their lives to defend our freedom and our nation’s independence! — Laura Gates

Finishing a close second was Kim Gray’s “Cambridge Fourth of July Parade,” featuring her two little guys on their trikes.

  • I love the candidness of this photo. A true expression was caught on both children — Amy Harnish
  • This is independence on so many levels! Obviously, these little guys were celebrating the Fourth, but just look at those adorable faces! One is proud of his independence on his three-wheeler, and the other is concentrating hard to master this early childhood rite of independence. — Laura Gates

Coming in third place was Bryan Norman’s independent “Yellow Flower,” growing amongst the purple ones.

The composition, lighting, exposure and theme are great. I think it is the most creative photo in this contest. — Brenda Staples

Honorable Mentions are as follows:

My First Car, Kim Shields

This is a great shot. I love the use of the reflection to really tell the story. And, a car, by all means, equals independence. — Anne Anderson (Fotowonder)

The Fourth on Geist, Kim Gray

Nice colors. It is easy to overexpose firework photos. Nice job. — Brenda Staples (Brenda Staples Photography)

Going for Gold, Steve Reising

The composition of this photograph is very dynamic. The water takes up the majority of the focus so you can see the length the swimmer has to finish, and then in the background you can tell the anticipation of the viewers by their stance. The ripples in the water are very clear, as is the swimmer. This is a great action shot. — Amy Harnish (Portraiture Studio)

Now, it’s time to send us your summer vacation photos and reports! Visit www.atGeist.com for complete rules and entry form. The deadline is Sept. 30, and the winner will be featured in our October newsletter and will receive a night for two at the Old Northside Inn Bed and Breakfast.
