Ice skaters will have a great place to hit the ice again now that The Federal Hill Commons Ice Plaza in Noblesville will be open for another season of winter fun.

The Ice Plaza, 175 Logan Street, Noblesville, will be open from Saturday, November 17 through Monday, January 7, 2019.

Kristi Spehler, community development manager, City of Noblesville Parks & Recreation Department, says the Ice Plaza opened in the winter of 2017 as a way for the community to enjoy the new park year-round by adding a winter outdoor activity.

“It has become Noblesville’s newest holiday tradition,” Spehler says.

The Ice Plaza is a temporary, portable rink with actual ice and 300 pairs of ice skates of various sizes. This season, the Ice Plaza will have admission ticket prices similar to last year’s prices. For $12, skaters can enjoy untimed skating all day. They can also come and go as they please throughout the day.

Spehler noted that with the purchase of an admission ticket wristband, it allows skaters to skate, take a break, grab a bite to eat, even leave the park and return to the ice later that day to continue their skating session. Families can make a day of it in Noblesville. After some time on the ice together, they can head to the Noblesville Square to shop or eat dinner and then take another turn on the ice before heading home.

“Last year was our first year for the rink, and more than 4,000 people skated at the rink and brought their friends and families to the Ice Plaza,” Spehler says. “As with all of our second-year programs and events, we expect the number of skaters and visitors to increase this year. We had a number of repeat skaters last year with some of them skating multiple times a week. We look forward to them returning this season.”

The Noblesville Parks and Recreation staff has also received many questions from the community and local sponsors about the rink.

“They are always excited to hear that it is returning to the park,” Spehler says. “Federal Hill Commons and the Ice Plaza bring year-round enjoyment to Noblesville and help our community stay active during months when there are fewer outdoor events and opportunities to stay active compared to the warmer months.”

During the holidays, the Ice Plaza also provides a new holiday tradition for Noblesville families.

“We decided to open a week earlier this year, so it could be enjoyed over Thanksgiving when families are in town visiting and looking for fun activities to do together,” Spehler says.

“Federal Hill Commons was designed for an ice rink and all of the infrastructure was in place to accommodate the rink, including its own separate power,” adds Brandon Bennett, Noblesville Parks Director. “The Market Plaza is the perfect place for the Ice Plaza and provides plenty of space for the rink, viewing area, skate rental, food trucks or any other special events that may take place around the rink.”

Bennett says ice rink installation will begin the week of Nov. 12, and “we ask park visitors to be aware of the construction work and use extra caution during that time.”

The Ice Plaza welcomes all ages and ice skating skills.

There are also opportunities for local businesses to get involved with the Ice Plaza and reach skaters and park visitors. Businesses interested in sponsoring logo boards around the interior of the rink, hosting a theme night with an on-site booth or other opportunities are asked to contact Kristi Spehler, Community Development Manager at 317-776-6350 or kspehler@noblesville.in.us for more information on ways to get involved.
