Sectional 8 girls basketball tournament field is set
Hard to do, right?
Well, Monday night’s draw produced some interesting matchups.
Sectional 8 PAIRINGS
(Feb. 2-3 & 5-6)
Carmel vs. Hamilton SE
Anderson vs. Noblesville
Fishers vs. Carmel-HSE winner
Westfield vs. Anderson-Noblesville winner
Championship: Friday’s winners
Carmel, Noblesville and Westfield would appear to have the best shots of cutting down the nets on Feb. 6. That means that HSE, Anderson and Fishers would need a lot of good fortune.
Noblesville (65.8) is the highest scoring team in Sectional 8, and Westfield has the best defensive average (41.0). Carmel has allowed 41.9 points-per-game.
So, here are some thoughts:
*—No. 7 Carmel (17-4) is the highest ranked team in the Class 4A Sectional 8 field. Also, the Lady Greyhounds own victories over the other five Sectional 8 members: Noblesville (56-48), HSE (52-32), Westfield (51-48) Anderson (72-49) and Fishers (54-24).
*—What about 2015 HCC champion Noblesville (21-4), which has a lot of talent and played a tournament-tested schedule? The Lady Millers are ranked No. 8.
*—How ‘bout No. 11 Westfield (19-3), the unbeaten Hoosier Crossroads Conference champion (6-0). The Lady Rocks were ranked in the top 10 at No. 8 until a loss last week. They also return all starters from a year ago.
*—Injury-riddled Hamilton Southeastern (10-10), which lost its top senior standout Megan Walton in late December to an ACL knee injury, has dropped 6 of its last 7 outings. The Lady Royals are young and are long shots at best without their Indiana Junior All-Star.
*—Drawing one of the two byes has to be a welcome sight for Fishers (6-15), which struggled this season with a young group after Indiana Junior All-Star Kara Gerka tore her ACL prior to the current season. She has yet to appear in any games this season. Again, the Lady Tigers should have their hands full.
*—And Anderson (10-13), a first-time Sectional 8 participant, would rate as another long shot at best.
The Westfield Sectional winner advances to Kokomo’s Memorial Gymnasium for the regional, joining sectional champs from East Noble, Homestead and McCutcheon on Feb. 13. The Westfield and McCutcheon sectional winners meet in the opening game at Kokomo.
Semi-state competition for Class 4A schools will be at either Jeffersonville or Richmond on Jan. 20, with the state Finals set for Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Feb. 27.
