Lawrence Central Head Basketball Coach Steps Down

(submitted)

Lawrence Central High School Varsity Basketball Coach, J.R. Shelt, has resigned his coaching responsibilities and will now be an assistant principal at the school.  This is part of a larger Secondary Redesign being implemented by Superintendent, Dr. Shawn Smith.

Coach Shelt coached seven seasons at Lawrence Central High School, compiling a 72-28 record and leading the Bears to a sectional title in 2012. Prior to serving at Lawrence Central, he was the Head Basketball Coach at Fishers High School. He served as Assistant Coach to Coach Jack Keefer at Lawrence North High School when LN won State Championships in 2004, 2005 and 2006. In 2006, Lawrence North won the national basketball championship.

While not planned, Shelt recognizes that building and instructional leadership will take additional time, and states, “I didn’t want to shortchange the kids. This is a special group. They can win a state championship. I will do anything I can for them.”

Per Athletic Director, Jeff Irwin, “Coach Shelt truly loves Lawrence Central and has plans to continue to advance his administrative career. He has left the program in solid shape and Lawrence Central is very thankful for the seven years he has invested in building this program.” The search for Shelt’s replacement will begin immediately.
