Lawrence school bus in accident

A Lawrence Township school bus and another vehicle crashed this morning (May 20) as the bus was on its way to a school. The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. in the 9600 block of Pendleton Pike, near 52nd Street, said Lawrence Police Department dispatchers. It resulted in minor injuries for the bus driver and a few children. The bus was on its way to Oaklandon School of Environmental Studies, an elementary school about three miles away, said Sharon Smith, spokeswoman for Lawrence Township Schools. It crashed with a landscaping vehicle, but a cause for the crash is unknown at the moment, she said. Police dispatchers did not have further details on how the accident occurred either. There were children on the bus at the time, ranging from Grades 1 to 6, but Smith did not immediately know how many children were on board. The driver and three children were taken to Community North Hospital as a precautionary measure, she said. The driver had complained of leg pain and the children complained of headaches, Smith said. There is someone from the district’s central office currently at the hospital while the victims are seen and treated. Smith said that as far as she knows, the bus driver has no history of accidents while on the job.
