Letter from Lawrence Mayor Ricketts

Dear City of Lawrence Resident:

I sincerely hope that you “weathered” the storm from Friday, May 30th. While we are thankful there was no loss of life, we understand the property loss and/or property damage was considerable for some people.

As I have driven through the City and observed the situation firsthand, it appears the majority of the damage was either tree related or flooded basements. We will begin removing all wood debris from the curbside starting this week and continue until Friday, June 13th. We are requesting the wood be cut in lengths of 5 ft. or less for easy and efficient pick-up.

If a majority of the debris has been picked up in your neighborhood but you have an additional amount, please call my office at 545-6191 or the Department of Public Works at 545-5566 for further assistance. This effort is in conjunction with Marion County Health & Hospital, City employees, and some private contractors.

I would also like to take this opportunity to make you aware and caution you regarding unscrupulous business practices. Unfortunately during tragedies such as these deceitful people will try to take advantage of those in need. Please be reminded that all work done within the City of Lawrence requires the proper permits be obtained prior to commencing work by either the homeowner or a licensed, bonded and insured contractor. For your protection, please call the Department of Public Works prior to hiring anyone to work on your property to ensure they are a legitimate contractor with the proper license. This will protect your interest as well as the City’s.

If you should have any comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to call my office.

Sincerely, Paul Ricketts
Mayor, City of Lawrence
