Digital Design teacher Brian Atkinson received First Place in the first annual Designing for Digital Contest by DCG: Digital Color Graphics. Atkinson, who is also the visual and performing arts department chairman, submitted his series that includes “My Spiritual Connection” and “My Cathartic Expulsion.
Atkinson said he feels it’s important to be a working artist while being a teacher. “It is important to produce my own work, and entering contests and exhibitions etc allows me to stay current on what is going on in art and graphic design in the business world,” said Atkinson. “My real world experience allows me to teach kids with real world assignments, not information or theories found in text books.” He added that as a teacher, it also validates what he does in the student’s eyes because they see that he is actively making his work available. “Winning a contest, having an exhibition, designing a logo or illustrating a book makes it easier for students to see there is a need for
Atkinson’s work will be on display at DCG, and open to be viewed from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday.
